種まき時期は2月～6月、収穫まで約45日です。江戸時代から栽培がはじまった日本でも馴染みのある葉野菜で、プランターで種からでも簡単に栽培できます。低温には強く2月頃から栽培が可能です。外葉から摘み取れば翌年春まで収穫が楽しめますが、3月以降に種まきをしたときは、とう立ちして葉が固くなってしまうので、株ごと収穫しましょう。
