種まき時期は3月～4月、収穫まで約55日です。サラダ菜はバターヘッドとも呼ばれ、結球レタスと不結球レタスとの中間種です。外葉から摘み取って長期収穫が出来ますが、春まきはトウ立ちしやすく葉が固くなるのでサラダなど生食に使うときは株ごと収穫しましょう。種は光を好むため、用土を薄く被せるのがポイント。
