種まき時期は3月～4月、収穫までは約60日です。日本へ17世紀に伝来した香辛野菜で、葉が縮れた「モスカードタイプ」が主流です。春以降に花芽をつけますが、早めに摘み取れば冬まで収穫ができ、冬になっても部屋の中に入れると冬越しも可能です。露地栽培では冬は地上部が枯れてしまいますが、翌年の春になるとふたたび芽を出します。
