ヘチマはインド原産のウリ科のつる性植物です。日本をはじめ、温帯・熱帯アジア各地で栽培されています。沖縄ではナーベーラーと呼ばれ、ゴーヤーと並ぶ夏野菜として人気があります。ヘチマの実を腐らせて皮と種子を取り除くと、たわしとして利用でき、また、若い実や花は食用にもできます。
